Join contemporary embroidery artist Sarah K. Benning for a 3-hour hands-on workshop where we'll explore painting and surface embroidery. Sarah will provide a basic design template, introduce color mixing strategies, and demonstrate embroidery stitches that will allow students to expand on the provided design and create something unique.

Sold Out Spend time painting and stitching a contemporary design on paper with artist and stitcher Sarah Benning. In this three-hour class, you'll start by sketching, then Sarah will guide you through the process of transferring your sketch onto thick watercolor paper. Next, explore basic color mixing and brush techniques before painting your design. Sarah will present a sampling of stitches you might want to use such as running stitch, backstitch, whipped backstitch, couching, and other combinations that work well on paper. You'll apply the chosen stitches to your painting and end with time to ask questions and share your work.

Fiber artist Sarah K. Benning returns to the Smith's General studio for another contemporary embroidery class. Sarah will guide participants step-by-step through her process demonstrating a number of stitches and discussing her favorite materials, inspirations, and techniques. All materials will be provided including a 5-inch wooden embroidery hoop, pencil, scissors, fabric, exclusive botanical patterns, and thread from DMC. All skill levels welcome!
