WILDFLOWER 2 PROJECT IDEAS for Patterns + PEEL.STICK.STITCH. Packs
***add in a tagline***…
While PEEL.STICK.STITCH. packs are all about you and your creativity, this is the place to be if you need a little extra guidance or project inspiration! This page will continue to evolve as Sarah dreams up new applications for these designs!
Project Idea: Sew-on felt Patches
Experiment with the contour lines of the designs by making colorful sew-on patches!
suggested materials:
5 pieces of 6x6” felt
3 or 5-inch embroidery hoop
Needle(s). Size 5 embroidery needle or size 20 chenille needle are both great options
Scissors for cutting felt, thread, and stabilizer
Hot water for rinsing away excess stabilizer
An item to sew patches onto
suggested colors:
DMC Embroidery Floss: DMC Embroidery Floss: 606 (red), 316 (lilac), 3826 (copper), 500 (dark green), 912 (mint)
This project can really be completed using any of your favorite fibers or colors as long as they are colorfast.
method:
Stretch your first piece of felt into the hoop. Make sure while pulling on the edges of the felt to pull with an even tension to keep the integrity of the felt together.
Cut out each flower of the Wildflower pack with a maximum amount of white space around it.
Peel the backings off of the first flower and position it in the center of the hoop.
Follow the lines of the patterns with small backstitches. Whip the backstitch if you’d like. If you need them, you can find stitch diagrams here.
Rinse off excess stabilizer using hot water and let dry—remember, the thread will take a lot longer to dry than the felt. Transfer your hoop to the next piece of felt and repeat with the next flower design.
When all of the flowers are done, cut out each flower from its square outside, and use a blanket stitch to sew the felt patches onto a piece of your choosing— jacket, cap, pencil pouch or something else!
Project Idea: Hoop Art
Arrange the flowers in a hoop and create a piece of art for your wall. If you can find one, an oval hoop is extra unique!
suggested materials:
5x9 inch oval embroidery hoop (or 9-inch circular embroidery hoop, or 5x9 inch needlepoint stretcher bars)
Fabric of your choice. The example hoop is stitched on linen.
Needle(s). Size 5 embroidery needle or size 20 chenille needle are both great options
Scissors for cutting fabric, thread, and stabilizer
Hot water for rinsing away excess stabilizer
suggested colors:
DMC Embroidery Floss: DMC Embroidery Floss: 367, 501, 522, 561, 580, 704, 733, 780, 895, 905, 3064, 3722, 3807, 3827, 3830, 3850, 3852
DMC Perle Cotton: 310, size 8
This project can really be completed using any of your favorite fibers or colors as long as they are colorfast.
method:
Cut a piece of fabric that is a couple inches larger than your hoop. Take your embroidery hoop apart and position your fabric, stretching it tight like a drum and tightening the hoop’s screw as much as you can.
Cut out each flower of the Wildflower pack, leaving a small boarder of stabilizer around each shape. Peel the backings off the flowers and position them in a line in the center of your hoop. The flowers should slightly overlap each other so they form a chain.
For whipped backstitch, seed stitch and satin stitch, cut an arm's length of embroidery floss, separate 3 strands, and thread your needle. Knot all ends together. For colonial knots, use three strands with a knot at only one end of the thread.
Use whipped backstitch to create the stems of the flowers.
Fill each leaf with satin stitch.
Use colonial knots and seed stitch to add extra textures to the flowers.
Create an outline with black perle cotton by couching long stitches around each shape. If you need them, you can find stitch diagrams here.
Rinse off excess stabilizer using hot water and let dry—remember, the thread will take a lot longer to dry than the fabric.
Finish the back of your hoop by trimming and running a bead of glue along the flat edge on the inner hoop. Press the fabric down and let dry.
